What sights can be visited during an excursion in Pamukkale Pamukkale

How is Pamukkale translated

  • Pamukkale in translation into Russian means cotton fortress.
Where is Pamukkale located
  • The total area of Pamukkale is 1,077 hectares, located from the province of Denizli, in southwestern Turkey.
The Legend of Pamukkale
  • An old legend about the Titans who once lived in this territory has come down to our days. Titans picked cotton and dried it in the sun. But one day the Titans forgot to remove it. And the cotton remained lying there. Over time, it hardened and turned into white mountains.
How Pamukkale was formed
  • 400 thousand years ago, an earthquake and a fault in the earth's crust occurred in this area. And hot mineral waters enriched with various minerals and chemicals, among which calcium predominates, came to the surface from this fault.
  • Water evaporates under the rays of the hot sun, and calcium settles, layers and forms bizarre formations that resemble snowdrifts, fortress walls or steps, terraces. These terraces are also called travertines.
  • Such a miracle of nature has no analogues in the world, these are unique formations. However, earlier people did not understand the value and uniqueness of travertines, walked on them in shoes and gradually destroyed them. Since 1988, UNESCO has taken everything into its own hands, opened to the public only an area of 5000 m2, where you can walk and admire the views, but the rest of the terraces are closed and regularly irrigated with water from the very ancient spring that scored 400 thousand years ago.
  • You will also be able to enjoy the views of the white Pamukkale mountain, walk along the travertines and take very beautiful photos. The impression is as if you are standing in summer clothes or in swimsuits against the background of snowy slopes. In fact, those who have not been to Pamukkale may not believe your stories that it is not snow and that the water is very warm. They also say that those who have not been to Pamukkale have not been to Turkey.
Cleopatra's Pool
  • It is also called the antique pool, because at its bottom there are antique columns from the main street of Hierapolis.
  • The water temperature reaches 36 degrees. It is very pleasant, and even slightly carbonated, so you may get the impression that you are bathing in warm champagne.
  • And they also say that the water in Cleopatra's pool has a unique rejuvenating effect. After swimming, you will definitely feel 10 years younger. But you should not abuse water either - for medical reasons, at most, you can spend 2 hours in Cleopatra's pool.
  • The water is quite heavy, very saturated with minerals. And this water helps with diseases of the musculoskeletal system, skin diseases, overweight, sunburn.
  • And if it is taken orally, it helps with diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. You will be able to drink water from the pump next to the pool. It tastes like borjomi and cleanses the intestines well.
Ruins of the ancient city of Hierapolis
  • The name of the city of Hierapolis is translated from Greek as " holy city "
  • Hierapolis originated in the II century BC and was part of the Great Roman Empire. It was built as a balneological resort. After learning about the healing properties of calcium water, people began to come here to improve their health. That is why the population of the city grew rapidly. Its population was about 100 thousand people. Which is not a little by antique standards.
  • There have been several earthquakes here. And each time the city was rebuilt anew. The Seljuk Turks conquered the city in the 12th century, and during the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century, the city was again destroyed by earthquakes and the last inhabitants left it. That is, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuk Turks and Ottomans lived on this territory.
  • Since the end of the 19th century and to this day, archaeological excavations continue here. The first excavations were conducted by the German scientist Karl Humman, and after the 50s of the twentieth century they were continued by the Italian professor Paolo Verzone. In 1988, Pamukkale and the ruins of the ancient city of Hierapolis were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The entrance to the museum costs 12 Turkish lira (only Turkish lira is accepted for payment).
City of the Dead (Necropolis in Hierapolis)
  • Necropolis is a city of the dead. Necropolises were taken out of the city. They did this for hygiene purposes and so that once again without a reason not to disturb the souls of the dead.
  • The necropolis in Hierapolis is the largest in Asia Minor. There are three types of graves preserved in it - Phrygian burial mounds, sarcophagi and crypts.
Theatre in Pamukkale
  • There are 206 Roman theaters in Turkey. The theater in Pamukkale was built in the II century AD and housed 15,000 spectators. The Pamukkale Theater is the third largest after Ephesus and Aspendos.
  • By the way, the theater is still used today, for example, when the Pamukkale Festival is held.
St. Philip 's Church
  • In the 1st century, Saint Philip (one of the disciples of Jesus Christ) arrived in Hierapolis with a mission to spread Christianity. However, he was not understood and not accepted by the locals. In Hierapolis, the Apostle Philip was martyred. In the 5th century, during the Byzantine Empire, a church was built in his honor on the place where the Apostle Philip was crucified. For 30 years, Italian researchers have been searching for the grave of St. Philip. The ruins of the basilica were discovered 40 meters from the church of St. Philip, and there was also the grave of the Apostle Philip.
